Martin Dodd
Since earning a MEng in Mechanical Engineering at The University of Surrey, Martin has spent the last 25 years working on vehicle safety research covering vehicles ranging from Tuk-Tuks to Tractors and everything in between. He combines extensive experience of vehicle testing and vehicle safety legislation with a range of skills in data science.
At the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) Martin worked as a Senior Research Engineer primary safety research projects for 10 years, mainly in the field of vehicle braking and handling. He developed rigorous scientific standards and test procedures which, in many cases, have been used as the basis for creating or updating international legislation.
Since 2018, Martin has worked as a Principal Engineer at Apollo Vehicle Safety, a small consultancy focussed on the potential of vehicle safety systems to solve the problems of road traffic collisions. During this time much of his work has been in support of the development of Transport for London’s (TfL’s) Bus Safety Standard (BSS). Most notably he was responsible for defining the BSS requirements for AEBS on London’s buses. His current work relates to TfL’s programme of research into Pedal Application Error (PAE) incidents on buses to understand the causes and assess potential solutions to avoid or mitigate such incidents in the future.
